The TELC B1 Digital exam is the modern version of the classic TELC B1 exam — with the key difference that the written part is completed entirely on a computer. At Lingocare in Frankfurt we offer this forward-thinking exam format. In this article you will find everything you need to know about the TELC B1 Digital exam: its structure, the differences from the paper exam, how to register, and the best preparation strategies.
What is the TELC B1 Digital Exam?
The TELC B1 Digital exam is an official variant of the TELC B1 exam in which the written section is conducted digitally — on a computer. The certificate you receive after passing the exam carries exactly the same official value as the classic TELC B1 certificate from the standard in-person exam. It is recognised equally by naturalisation authorities, immigration offices, employers, and educational institutions throughout Germany.
This means you have a choice between two equally valid exam formats — paper or computer — and can choose the format that suits you best. The outcome is the same in both cases: an officially recognised TELC B1 German language certificate.
What is the difference from the standard exam?
The key difference between the TELC B1 Digital exam and the classic TELC B1 standard exam lies in the written part:
In the classic standard exam, all tasks are completed on paper — you read printed texts, listen to audio through speakers or headphones, solve tasks by hand, and write your essay with a pen.
In the TELC B1 Digital exam, the entire written section takes place on a computer. You read texts on screen, listen to audio through headphones, click answers or type your essay directly on the keyboard. The oral part, however, remains the same in both formats — it always takes place in person with an examiner and a second candidate.
Content, task types, difficulty level, and assessment criteria are identical in both formats. Only the medium changes.
Who should choose the digital format?
The TELC B1 Digital exam is particularly suitable for:
Fast typists: Anyone who writes faster and more fluently on a computer than by hand has a clear advantage in the digital format — especially in the writing section, where longer texts need to be produced.
People with difficult handwriting: The assessment of handwritten texts can sometimes be affected by hard-to-read writing. On a computer, text is always clear and legible — eliminating this risk factor entirely.
Digitally confident candidates: Anyone who works a lot on computers in their professional and everyday life and feels more comfortable in this environment than with pen and paper will find the digital exam setting more natural.
Candidates with physical limitations: For people who find handwriting difficult due to physical conditions, the digital format can be a more comfortable alternative.
Exam Structure: Written Part on Computer
The written part of the TELC B1 Digital exam takes place entirely on a provided computer and covers the same four sections as the paper exam:
Reading: You read texts on screen and select the correct answers by clicking or typing. Texts and tasks correspond to B1 level — everyday topics such as work, travel, society, and personal experiences.
Listening: Audio files are played through headphones. You listen to conversations, interviews, and announcements and answer the tasks directly on the computer. Recordings are played twice, just as in the paper exam.
Language elements: You complete gaps in short texts — either by clicking the correct option or by typing. Grammar and vocabulary knowledge at B1 level are tested.
Writing: You write your text directly on the computer. This has the advantage that you can easily correct, rephrase, and restructure your text — without crossing out or rewriting. Typing errors can be corrected effortlessly.
Basic computer skills are helpful for the digital exam — particularly touch typing, navigating with a mouse, and working with on-screen interfaces. However, you do not need to be an IT expert. All technical procedures are briefly explained before the exam begins.
Exam Structure: Oral Part
The oral part of the TELC B1 Digital exam is identical to that of the classic B1 exam. It takes place in person after a short break, lasts approximately 15 minutes, and is conducted together with a second candidate:
Task 1 — Planning something together: You and your exam partner discuss a task and agree on a solution. Communication skills and the ability to respond to your partner are central.
Task 2 — Presenting a topic: You give a short presentation on an everyday topic and report on it in a structured way. Clarity and coherence matter more than grammatical perfection.
Task 3 — Responding to a presentation: You listen to your partner’s presentation and respond with questions, additions, or your opinion. Spontaneity and active listening are assessed.
There is no preparation time before the oral exam. The examiner guides you through all tasks and gives clear instructions.

Preparation tips
Practise writing on a computer. The biggest difference from the paper exam lies in the writing section. If you are used to writing by hand, start writing longer German texts on a computer well in advance. Practise speed and structure when typing in German.
Familiarise yourself with the digital exam format. TELC provides information about the digital exam interface. Review the format in advance so you have no surprises on exam day.
Use official TELC B1 practice materials. The digital exam is identical in content to the paper exam — so official TELC B1 model tests are the ideal preparation. Complete at least two full practice tests under timed conditions.
Train all four skills equally. Reading, listening, language elements, and writing — all four sections are assessed and should be practised regularly. Do not neglect any area.
Actively prepare for the oral part. Even though the focus is on the digital written section — the oral part equally determines whether you pass. Practise speaking freely in German on a regular basis.
Check your typing speed. If you type very slowly in German, this could be a problem in the writing section. Use free online typing trainers to improve your speed on a German keyboard layout.
