The TELC B2 Digital exam combines the high demands of the classic B2 exam with the flexibility and advantages of a digital format. At Lingocare in Frankfurt we offer this modern exam variant — with full technical equipment and a professional examination environment. In this article you will find everything you need to know about the TELC B2 Digital exam: its structure, the differences from the paper exam, how to register, and the best preparation strategies.
What is the TELC B2 Digital Exam?
The TELC B2 Digital exam is the digital variant of the classic TELC B2 exam. The written part is completed entirely on a computer, while the oral part takes place in person as usual. The certificate you receive after passing the exam is officially identical to the classic TELC B2 certificate — it carries the same value and is equally recognised by naturalisation authorities, immigration offices, universities, employers, and professional associations.
The B2 Digital format gives you the opportunity to earn your German language certificate in the way that suits you best — whether with pen and paper or at a keyboard. The outcome is equivalent and legally equal in both cases.
What is the difference from the standard exam?
The difference between the TELC B2 Digital exam and the classic TELC B2 standard exam concerns only the written part:
In the classic standard exam, all written tasks are completed on paper — you read printed texts, solve tasks by hand, and write your essay with a pen.
In the TELC B2 Digital exam, the entire written part takes place on a provided computer. You read texts on screen, listen to audio files through headphones, click answers, or type your essay directly on the keyboard. The advantage: corrections and reformulations are far easier on a computer than on paper — especially in the demanding writing section at B2 level, this is a genuine advantage.
The oral part is identical in both formats and always takes place in person. Content, task types, difficulty level, and assessment criteria are also fully identical in both formats.
Who should choose the digital format?
The TELC B2 Digital exam is particularly suitable for:
Experienced typists: At B2 level, the writing section requires producing longer, structured texts — formal letters, statements of opinion, argumentative essays. Anyone who can formulate ideas more quickly and fluently on a computer than by hand will benefit significantly from the digital format.
Candidates with difficult handwriting: At B2 level, complex texts are assessed — if the examiner finds the handwriting difficult to read, this can negatively affect the assessment. On a computer, the text is always clear and legible.
Professionals with a digital working environment: Anyone who primarily writes on a computer in their professional life will find the digital exam environment more natural and less tiring than the paper exam.
Candidates who value the ability to edit: On a computer you can revise your text at any time while writing, rearrange sentences, and correct mistakes — without crossing out or rewriting. At B2 level, where text quality and structure are particularly important, this is a clear advantage.
Exam Structure: Written Part on Computer
The written part of the TELC B2 Digital exam takes place entirely on a provided computer and covers the same four sections as the paper exam:
Reading: You read demanding texts on current, social, or professional topics on screen and answer questions about them. At B2 level, implicit statements, conclusions, and the author’s opinions are also tested — not just directly stated information. Critical reading comprehension and the ability to distinguish between the main argument and supporting details are essential.
Listening: Audio files are played through provided headphones. You listen to conversations, interviews, lectures, or radio features and complete tasks directly on the computer. Recordings are played twice. At B2 level the content is realistic and complex — similar to what you would encounter in the German workplace or media.
Language elements: You complete gaps in texts — either by clicking the correct option or by typing. At B2 level, more complex grammatical structures such as Konjunktiv II, passive constructions, and relative clauses are also tested. A strong contextual understanding is particularly important here.
Writing: You produce a longer, structured text directly on the computer — for example a formal letter, a statement on a current topic, or an argumentative essay. The major advantage of the digital format: you can revise your text at any time while writing, move sections around, and improve your phrasing. This makes it significantly easier to produce a clearly structured, linguistically high-quality text.
The written part lasts approximately 115 minutes in total. Careful time management remains essential even on a computer — plan sufficient time for each section and review your answers before moving to the next section.
Exam Structure: Oral Part
The oral part of the TELC B2 Digital exam is identical to that of the classic B2 exam. It takes place in person after a short break, lasts approximately 15 minutes, and is conducted together with a second candidate:
Task 1 — Discussing and deciding together: You and your exam partner discuss a task, exchange arguments, and reach a joint decision. At B2 level, nuanced argumentation and the ability to engage with your partner’s position are particularly important.
Task 2 — Presenting a topic: You give a structured short presentation on a given topic. Structure, argumentation, and linguistic variety are the focus at B2 level.
Task 3 — Responding to a presentation: You listen to your partner’s presentation and respond with follow-up questions, constructive feedback, or additional thoughts. Spontaneity, active listening, and communicative competence are assessed.
There is no preparation time before the oral exam. The examiner accompanies the conversation but does not intervene in the content.

Preparation tips
Practise writing longer German texts on a computer. The biggest advantage of the digital format — easy editing — only works fully if you can write confidently and fluently at the keyboard. Practise regularly writing structured texts in German on a computer, focus on argumentation and coherence, and make use of the ability to revise as you go.
Familiarise yourself with the digital exam format. Review information about TELC’s digital exam interface in advance so you do not lose time understanding the system on exam day.
Use official TELC B2 model tests. The digital exam is identical in content to the paper exam — so official TELC B2 practice materials (telc.net) are the ideal preparation. Complete at least three full model tests under timed conditions.
Read and listen to demanding German every day. Read newspaper articles, specialist features, and opinion pieces at B2 level. Listen to German podcasts, radio programmes, and news broadcasts. The more authentic German you engage with, the more confident you will feel in the exam.
Specifically train B2-level grammar. Konjunktiv II, passive constructions, relative clauses, and complex sentence connectors are all tested at B2 level. Work specifically on these structures and integrate them into your writing and speaking practice.
Actively prepare for the oral part. Practise discussing and presenting in German with a partner — focusing on argumentation, structure, and linguistic variety. The oral part carries equal weight in determining whether you pass.
