The TELC Written Exam B2 is the targeted solution for anyone who needs official proof of written German language skills at B2 level — without an oral exam. At Lingocare in Frankfurt we offer this partial exam at a professional, officially licensed examination centre. In this article you will find everything you need to know about the exam structure, who needs it, how it differs from the full B2 exam, and how to prepare effectively.
What is the TELC Written Exam B2?
The TELC Written Exam B2 is a standalone certificate covering only the written part of the TELC B2 exam. It includes the four written competency areas — reading, listening, language elements, and writing — at the demanding B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The oral part of the exam does not take place.
The certificate of the Written Exam B2 is an officially issued TELC document confirming written German language skills at B2 level. At this level you can understand complex texts, write in a differentiated way, and process and communicate demanding information in writing. The certificate is recognised by numerous institutions, employers, and authorities as a valid partial proof of language competence.
Who should take this exam?
The TELC Written Exam B2 is suitable for several groups of candidates:
Candidates with an existing oral B2 certificate: Anyone who has already passed the oral part of the B2 exam and only needs the written proof can use the Written Exam B2 to provide exactly that — efficiently and specifically.
Professionals requiring written competence in their field: In many academic and professional areas, only written German competence at B2 level is explicitly required — for example for certain university admissions, specialist course enrolments, or qualified office roles where producing precise documents is central.
Healthcare and nursing professionals with partial requirements: In some recognition processes for foreign professional qualifications in healthcare, proof of written language competence alone is sufficient in an initial phase. The Written Exam B2 can serve as an efficient first step in this context.
Candidates with strategic exam planning: Anyone who wishes to take the written and oral parts of the B2 exam at different times — for example to focus intensively on written skills first — has the flexibility to do so with the Written Exam B2.
Cost-conscious candidates with specific needs: At an exam fee of €190, the Written Exam B2 is more affordable than the full B2 exam (€220). If only the written proof is needed, it is the more cost-effective choice.
How is it different from the full B2 exam?
The difference can be summed up in one sentence: the full TELC B2 exam tests all four competency areas — reading, listening, writing, and speaking. The certificate of the full exam therefore confirms comprehensive German language skills at B2 level.
The TELC Written Exam B2 tests only the written competencies — reading, listening, language elements, and writing. The oral part is not included. The certificate accordingly confirms only written German competence at B2 level.
Which option is right for you depends entirely on what your authority, employer, or institution requires. Check carefully in advance whether a full B2 certificate is required or whether written proof alone is sufficient — and choose accordingly.
Exam Structure: What is tested?
The TELC Written Exam B2 covers only the written exam part and takes place entirely in the morning. There is no oral section. The four written sections are:
Reading: You read demanding texts on current, social, professional, or academic topics and answer questions about them. At B2 level it is no longer sufficient to understand only explicitly stated information — you must also grasp implicit statements, conclusions, the author’s stance, and the overall context of a text. Critical reading comprehension and the ability to distinguish between the main argument, supporting reasoning, and detail are essential at this level.
Listening: You listen to longer, more complex conversations, lectures, interviews, or radio broadcasts and complete tasks based on what you hear. Recordings are played twice. At B2 level, listening texts reflect what you would encounter in the German workplace, media, or academic contexts — with natural speech speed, different speakers, and intellectually demanding topics. Beyond understanding facts, grasping opinions, attitudes, and implied messages is also tested.
Language elements: You complete missing words or expressions in texts. At B2 level, not only basic grammar structures but also more complex linguistic devices are tested — including Konjunktiv II, passive constructions, multi-part connectors, and more advanced vocabulary. Precise contextual understanding and a broad active vocabulary are indispensable for this section.
Writing: You produce a longer, structured text on a given topic — typically a formal letter, an argumentative statement, a commentary, or a structured report. At B2 level you are expected to argue clearly and in a nuanced way, justify and defend your position, address different perspectives, and produce a coherent, well-structured text using a wide range of linguistic devices. The quality of argumentation, textual coherence, and linguistic variety are the decisive assessment criteria at this level.
The written part lasts approximately 115 minutes in total. Careful time management is particularly important at B2 level — the writing section is very time-intensive and should not be underestimated.

Preparation tips
Plan intensive preparation time. B2 level is demanding — plan at least six to eight weeks of intensive preparation. Since there is no oral part, you can focus entirely on the written skills — use this advantage fully.
Use official TELC B2 practice materials. The content requirements of the Written Exam are identical to the written part of the full B2 exam. Official TELC B2 model tests (telc.net) are therefore the best preparation. Complete at least three full written sections under exam conditions.
Train writing demanding texts. The writing section is particularly challenging at B2 level. Regularly practise writing statements of opinion, commentaries, formal letters, and structured reports. Focus on clear argumentation, logical structure, linguistic variety, and the use of connectors and transitions.
Read demanding German texts every day. Newspapers, magazine articles, and non-fiction at B2 level sharpen both your reading comprehension and your active vocabulary. Read at least one longer text every day and analyse the argumentation and structure.
Systematically expand your B2 vocabulary. At B2 level, basic everyday vocabulary is no longer sufficient. Learn thematic vocabulary in areas such as politics, economics, society, the environment, health, and science — these are the topics most frequently tested at B2 level.
Specifically train B2 grammar structures. Konjunktiv II, passive voice, complex relative clauses, two-part connectors, and nominal style — these structures are relevant at B2 level. Actively practise them in your writing exercises.
Listen to complex German every day. Listening comprehension is part of the Written Exam. Listen to German radio programmes, podcasts, and news formats — ideally on social and current affairs topics, which are frequently tested at B2 level.
Practise time management consistently. 115 minutes for four demanding sections — especially the writing section can be very time-intensive. In every mock test, practise strictly keeping to the time limits and completing all sections fully.
