The telc exam is one of the most widely recognised German language certificates in Germany. Whether you need it for citizenship, a residence permit, or employment, passing it confidently requires the right preparation strategy — not just more vocabulary lists.
Understand the exam structure before you study
Many candidates make the mistake of studying German generally without understanding exactly what the telc exam tests. The written exam covers four sections: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, language elements, and writing. Each section has its own time limit and scoring system. Knowing this before you start studying lets you focus your preparation where it counts most.
Reading — work with the questions first
In the reading section, read the questions before you read the text. This tells you exactly what information you are looking for and saves you from reading every word in detail. Scan for keywords that match the questions and focus your attention there.
Listening — practice with real audio
The listening section trips up many candidates because exam audio is recorded at natural speaking speed with real accents. Practice daily with German radio, podcasts, and YouTube videos. Do not just listen passively — write down what you hear and check your accuracy. The telc listening section rewards candidates who are used to processing German at full speed.
Writing — structure is everything
The writing section is not testing your creativity. It is testing your ability to write a clear, structured response using correct grammar and appropriate vocabulary. Learn three or four standard sentence structures for introducing, developing, and concluding a point. Practice writing within the time limit every time — never without it.
The oral exam — confidence beats perfection
The oral exam lasts approximately 15 minutes and consists of three tasks. Examiners are not looking for perfect grammar — they are assessing whether you can communicate clearly and maintain a conversation. Speak at a natural pace, use connecting words like jedoch, außerdem, and deshalb, and never leave a silence for more than a few seconds.
