TELC Written Exam B2 Digital Frankfurt — On Computer, No Oral Exam

The TELC Written Exam B2 Digital is the most demanding and at the same time most modern variant among the written partial exams: you complete the entire written part of the B2 exam digitally on a computer — without an oral exam and without pen and paper. At Lingocare in Frankfurt we offer this forward-looking exam format with full technical equipment and a professional examination environment. In this article you will find everything you need to know about the structure, who it is for, how it compares to other formats, and how to prepare effectively.

What is the TELC Written Exam B2 Digital?

The TELC Written Exam B2 Digital combines two defining features: it is a partial exam — only the written part is tested, with no oral section — and a digital exam, in which all written tasks are completed on a provided computer.

In terms of content, it is fully equivalent to the written part of the TELC B2 exam at the demanding B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The certificate issued is an officially recognised TELC document confirming written German language skills at B2 level — fully equivalent to the certificate from the paper version. No oral part, no handwriting — everything digital, everything on a computer.

Who should take this exam?

The TELC Written Exam B2 Digital is the ideal choice for:

Digitally confident candidates at B2 level with partial requirements: Anyone who needs only written proof at B2 level and prefers to work on a computer will find this format the optimal combination of a modern approach and targeted exam content. At B2 level, written tasks are particularly demanding — the ability to write and revise freely on a computer is a genuine advantage.

Healthcare and academic professionals: For nursing professionals, doctors, engineers, and other specialists who need only written B2 proof for a recognition process or university admission, this format is efficient and precisely targeted.

Candidates with an existing oral B2 certificate: Anyone who has already successfully completed the oral part of the B2 exam and only needs the written proof — preferably in digital form — is ideally served by this option.

Professionals with limited time: Without an oral part, the total exam duration is shorter. For professionals with a full schedule, this is a meaningful advantage.

Candidates with difficult handwriting: At B2 level, writing tasks are particularly complex and demanding. If handwriting affects legibility, it can negatively influence the assessment. The digital format eliminates this risk entirely.

Cost-conscious candidates: At €190, the Written Exam B2 Digital is more affordable than the full TELC B2 Digital exam (€220) — with identical content requirements in the written part.

How is it different from the paper version?

The only difference from the TELC Written Exam B2 (paper version) lies in the medium: in the paper version, all tasks are completed by hand on paper. In the digital version, all tasks are completed on a provided computer — you type instead of writing. Content, task types, level, and assessment criteria are fully identical in both versions. Both formats have no oral exam section, and the certificate is equally recognised in both cases.

How is it different from the full B2 Digital exam?

The full TELC B2 Digital exam consists of a written part on a computer and an oral part in person. The certificate confirms German language skills at B2 level across all four competency areas including speaking.

The TELC Written Exam B2 Digital covers only the written part on a computer — without an oral section. The certificate confirms only written German language skills at B2 level. If a full B2 qualification is required, the full exam is necessary. If written proof alone is sufficient, the partial exam is the more flexible and affordable option.

Exam Structure: What is tested?

The entire written part takes place on a provided computer. There is no oral section. The four sections are:

Reading: You read demanding texts on screen — on current social, professional, or academic topics — and select correct answers by clicking or typing. At B2 level, not only directly stated information is tested but also implicit statements, the author’s stance, conclusions, and the overall context of the text. Critical reading comprehension and the ability to understand complex argumentative structures are essential at this level.

Listening: Audio files are played through provided headphones. You listen to conversations, lectures, interviews, or radio broadcasts at B2 level and complete tasks directly on the computer. Recordings are played twice. At B2 level the content is complex and reflects what you would encounter in German media, the workplace, or academic settings. Beyond facts, the opinions, attitudes, and implied messages of speakers are also tested.

Language elements: You complete missing words or expressions in texts — by clicking or typing directly. At B2 level, more complex grammatical structures are tested: Konjunktiv II, passive constructions, multi-part connectors, advanced vocabulary structures, and nominal style. Precise contextual understanding and a broad active vocabulary are indispensable for this section.

Writing: You compose a longer, structured text directly on the computer — typically an argumentative statement, a formal letter, a commentary, or a structured report on a given topic. At B2 level, nuanced argumentation, logical text structure, a broad range of linguistic devices, and the ability to incorporate different perspectives are expected. The decisive advantage of the digital format: you can revise your text at any time, rearrange sections, and improve phrasing — this is particularly valuable at B2 level where text quality and argumentation are the most important assessment criteria.

The written part lasts approximately 115 minutes in total. Careful time management is particularly important at B2 level — the writing section is very demanding and time-intensive.

Preparation tips

Practise writing demanding texts on a computer intensively. At B2 level, writing tasks are particularly complex — argumentative statements, commentaries, formal letters. Regularly practise writing such texts directly in German on a computer. Make full use of the ability to revise and improve your text as you go — this is a core skill for the digital exam.

Plan intensive preparation time. B2 level requires at least six to eight weeks of focused preparation. Since there is no oral part, you can focus entirely on the four written skills — use this focus to your advantage.

Use official TELC B2 practice materials. The digital partial exam is identical in content to the written part of the full B2 exam. Official TELC B2 model tests (telc.net) are therefore the best preparation. Complete at least three full written sections under timed conditions.

Specifically train B2 grammar and vocabulary. Konjunktiv II, passive constructions, complex relative clauses, two-part connectors, and nominal style — these structures are tested at B2 level. Also expand your vocabulary on topics such as politics, economics, society, the environment, and health.

Read and listen to demanding German every day. Newspapers, specialist articles, and podcasts at B2 level sharpen both your reading and listening comprehension and your active vocabulary. Read at least one longer text every day and listen to at least one German-language feature on a current topic.

Familiarise yourself with the digital exam format. Review information about the TELC digital exam interface in advance. Feeling comfortable with the digital environment saves valuable time on exam day and reduces nerves.

Practise time management consistently. 115 minutes for four demanding sections — especially the writing section at B2 level can be very time-intensive. In every mock test, practise completing all sections fully and within the time limits.
